A few days ago, I received an email that contained a strange abbreviation: em's. Now, I have a significant communications and design background. So, to me, "em" is the letter M. Or maybe it's short for the em dash, the longest of all the dashes and so named because, in the days of actual typesetting, it was the width of the letter M.
